About Heel Pain
Heel pain affects millions of Americans every year. Heel pain is a common complaint, especially amongst those who are involved in sports. Heel pain can interfere with your day-to-day activities, particularly exercise. If treated quickly and properly, your foot will heal well, allowing safe return to activity.
Heel Pain Treatments
Treatments for heel pain usually involve a combination of techniques, such as orthotic devices, over-the-counter pain relievers, and stretching exercises to reduce pain and speed up recovery. Prescription 3d printed orthoses are designed to fit each patient's own foot structure. Orthotic devices relieve heel pain and provide cushioning and arch support for added shock absorption, comfort and protection. In cases that don't respond to conservative treatment, EPAT- Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Treatment may be needed. This treatment sends acoustic waves at the affected area to increase the body's natural healing response and decrease inflammation.
A hammertoe is a deformity of the toe. This condition causes the toe to bend at the middle joint so that it resembles a hammer. At the start, hammertoes are very flexible and can be fixed, but if not treated promptly, they may become fixed and require surgery to correct them.
Drugs that reduce inflammation can alleviate your pain and reduce swelling. Sometimes, a podiatrist will use cortisone injections to reduce pain. Splinting the toe may help in the very early stages. Your podiatrist may give you a custom-made orthotic device to wear inside your shoe. This can reduce your pain and keep your hammertoe from getting worse. When the hammertoe is not resolved with the above methods, surgery may be needed.
Bunions are painful, bony bumps that form on the joint connecting the big toe. Bunions can be very painful. For many people, bunions run in the family. If bunions run in your family, your risk of developing them is higher. Years of wearing poorly fitting shoes can cause a bunion. Such footwear gradually pushes the bones of the foot into an unnatural shape.
To treat your bunion, your podiatrist may recommend an over-the-counter reliever, as well as a medication to relieve swelling. An orthotic device may be placed inside your shoe to help realign the bones of your foot. This will relieve the pressure on your bunion and ease your pain.
