Six Smart Tips for Diabetic Foot Care

Foot problems are common in people with diabetes. You can lower your chances of having foot problems by taking care of your feet everydiabetic foot care day. Our Dyker Heights podiatrist Dr. Corinne Kauderer at Dyker Heights Foot & Dental Wellness in Brooklyn, NY, offers a complete range of podiatric services. Here are six smart tips for diabetic foot care.

1. Examine your feet.
People with diabetes may have foot issues, but feel no discomfort in their feet. Stay a step ahead of diabetes-related foot complications by examining your feet every day. Search for problems such as cuts, calluses, ingrown toenails, red spots, scabs, sores, corns, and blisters. Look for signs of decreased blood flow, such as shiny or thin skin, abnormal hairlessness, and temperature variation.

2. Wash your feet every day.
Wash your feet every day, preferably with warm water and mild soap. Always check bath water with your hands first to make sure it's not too hot. Be gentle when washing your feet. Wash them using a sponge or soft washcloth. Do not soak your feet. Thoroughly dry your feet, especially between the toes. Pat your skin dry; do not rub.

3. Keep your skin soft.
Moisturize after washing and drying your feet to keep your skin smooth and soft. Coat your feet with a small amount of foot cream, lotion, or petroleum jelly on the tops and bottoms of your feet. Avoid rubbing lotion between your toes.

4. Wear socks and shoes.
Wear socks and shoes at all times. Do not walk around barefoot indoors or outdoors. Don't wear pointy-toe shoes or high heels. Avoid shoes that leave your toes or heels unprotected, like flip-flops, sandals, or open-toed shoes. Check your shoes before wearing them. Make sure there are no objects inside. Choose clean, comfortable socks that fit well.

5. Trim your nails regularly.
Trim your toenails after showering, when they are soft. Trim your toenails straight across and use a nail file to give your nails a slight curve. Avoid cutting into the corners of toes. Keep your toenails at a moderate length. Short nails are more prone to becoming ingrown nails. If you need help, see your podiatrist.

6. See a podiatrist regularly.
Our Dyker Heights podiatrist Dr. Kauderer specializes in foot and ankle care, including the treatment of diabetes-related foot problems. See your podiatrist every few months, even if you don't have any problems with your feet. Get your feet examined by your doctor at every visit. Your podiatrist will play a key role in helping you manage diabetes successfully and avoid foot problems. Dr. Kauderer performs Doppler exams to check the circulation of patients.
